Why Are My Hearing Aids Whistling?

If your hearing aids are whistling or buzzing, it can get frustrating to know that the investment into your hearing health isn’t working as it used to.

The devices you have are just one piece of the puzzle; premium care from a hearing health expert is what makes the biggest difference. Just like how you’d bring your car to your mechanic for things going bump that shouldn’t, your hearing aids deserve the same level of TLC.

If your hearing aids were purchased elsewhere and they’re buzzing in your ears, or a loved one commented on hearing feedback from your hearing aids, there are a few different causes for whistling in your ears that could have a pretty easy fix with the right professional help.

A Too-Loose Fit

Our ears grow with us over time; it’s possible that your initial fitting is outdated, and your hearing aids are now too loose in your ears, meaning a lack of true acoustic seal. Without that acoustic seal, sound gets away from your ear and back into the microphone of your hearing aid, leading to feedback.

To address the loose fit of your hearing aids, your audiologist will take care to find the right earpiece that fits your ears snugly, without causing any gaps or earaches from feedback issues.

Earwax Blockages

Your hearing aids deliver sound to your ear canal, but one of the side effects of their placement in your ear is that earwax can build up without a way to remove itself, leading to impaction that could affect your hearing or cause whistling in your ears.

With a professional earwax removal and ear cleaning, you can remove those impacted bits of wax. Then, double-check that your hearing aids are back to normal. If they’re not, check your devices themselves: earwax can sometimes make its way into vents and receivers, affecting sound quality.

Turn Down the Volume!

When your hearing aid feels quieter than usual, it can be tempting to turn the sound up to hear better, but too loud of a volume could force sound back into your hearing aids, causing whistling and unfortunate feedback. Sometimes, an error in programming could lead to the sound being too loud, too.

The solution? Turn down the volume of your device and see if that helps with the feedback.

Broken Tubing or Other Mishaps

For some hearing aid models with tubes that connect the earmold with the body of the hearing aid, the tube connecting the two can harden and shrink, leading to pulling and a bad fit that could lead to feedback issues.

A replacement tube is a quick fix—and we can replace the tube for you, if the need arises.
