Incorporated in 1955, the long, slender barrier island known as Longboat Key straddles Sarasota and Manatee counties. Like Anna Maria Island to the north, Longboat Key was first discovered by de Soto, was home to Spanish and Cuban fishermen in the early 1800s, and was said to be inhabited for a time by pirate Jean Lafitte, who shipwrecked off its coast.
