Ellenton, FL, got its name from the daughter of Major George Patton, who bought the old Gamble sugar plantation located on the north shore of the Manatee River in 1870. The population of Ellenton grew in the early 1900s with the establishment of a plant for processing fuller’s earth (a type of clay used in beauty products and as a filler in paint, plaster, adhesives, and pharmaceuticals).
