Serving the Anna Maria Island, FL, Community
Anna Maria Island, FL, was populated by Caloosan and Timucan Native American tribes before the arrival of Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1539.
Although Cuban fishermen and others visited the island and settled there temporarily, George Emerson Bean was the first permanent resident, building a homestead on the northern tip of the island, now known as Bean Point, in 1892 and naming the island after his sister-in-law and his wife.
