About Our Comprehensive Hearing Test

$
STEP ONE

Consultation

Our hearing assessment begins with a friendly discussion with a hearing expert, about you, your medical history, your hobbies and habits, and any symptoms you may be experiencing relating to hearing loss. This gives our professionals a comprehensive understanding of your situation and helps us identify any genetic, medical or lifestyle factors that may be contributing to hearing loss. At this time, we can also answer any questions you may have about our hearing testing, or about hearing loss in general.

$
STEP TWO

Video Otoscope

The next step is a physical examination, in which our specialists use a tool called an otoscope to evaluate the ear canal for symptoms such as earwax, blockages or inflammation. This allows us to see if there are any physical obstructions that need to be removed and gives us a better understanding of your ear health.

STEP THREE

Consultation

Following the physical exam, we will conduct a series of hearing tests to determine whether you have hearing loss, as well as the level and type. Our professionals test each ear using tones of different frequencies and volumes, so that we have the most accurate understanding of your hearing capabilities.

Some of the hearing tests we may use, depending on the client, include:  Pure Tone, Bone Conduction, Tympanometry, Multiple Speech tests

STEP FOUR

Results

Our primary goal is for you to be fully informed about your hearing health so that you can make the best decisions for you and your family moving forward. Once we have your test results, we will walk you through a chart called an audiogram, which shows your ability to hear at various volumes and frequencies. Each ear is represented separately on the chart, as hearing loss can sometimes occur asymmetrically. After reviewing your results, our team will recommend treatment options and answer any questions you may have.

FAQ’s About Hearing Assessments

Do I Need a Hearing Test?

Hearing tests should be included as part of your regular health screenings. It is important to get your hearing checked before it becomes a serious issue, but you should certainly see a hearing care professional if you experience any of the following:

  • Regularly mishearing words
  • Difficulty hearing others in noisy environments
  • Difficulty hearing on the phone
  • Frequently asking others to repeat words or speak louder
  • Listening to music or watching TV at volumes that are too loud for others

What Causes Hearing Loss?

Hearing loss can occur at any age, but becomes more of a risk as individuals age. It can be caused by repeated exposure to loud noises (noise induced hearing loss), inflammation, earwax buildup, growths or tumors, deterioration of the inner ear, or even certain medications.

Are Hearing Tests Covered by Insurance?

Many health plans cover hearing testing. Gulf Gate Hearing Aid Center is in network with a number of insurance providers, including Aetna, United Healthcare, and Humana. If you have questions about whether your insurance will cover a hearing test, contact us today.

Can a Hearing Test Damage Your Hearing?

Hearing tests are safe, fast and painless. When conducted by licensed professionals, they run little to no risk of damaging your hearing in any way.

Can Hearing Tests be Done at Home?

While there are many online and home hearing tests available, working with a board-certified Hearing Instrument Specialist or audiologist is the only way to ensure accurate results. A face-to-face hearing test is also the best way to ask questions in the moment and get expert feedback and advice.

Comprehensive Discussion

This initial conversation with a hearing expert is crucial, as it helps us understand your overall health and any factors that may be affecting your hearing. This discussion aids in identifying potential causes of hearing loss and guiding appropriate treatment.

Visual Inspection of Ears
We start with a visual inspection to check for any conditions that might affect test accuracy, such as earwax buildup or damage to the ear canal.
Middle Ear Function Tests
These tests are essential for evaluating the movement of the eardrum and middle ear bones, helping to diagnose specific types of hearing loss.
Inner Ear Sensory Cell Screening
By screening the function of inner ear sensory cells, we can detect damage or dysfunction that may affect your ability to hear.
Hearing Level Measurements
We measure your hearing levels to determine the degree and configuration of your hearing loss, which is crucial for deciding on the best treatment options.
